Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Friday 25.02.2022

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

The danger increases when the wind picks up. Avoid areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Some naturally released avalanches can occur.

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Thursday 24. February 2022

Kraftig vind fra sør onsdag og torsdag har trolig flyttet snø inn i leheng mot vest og nord, spesielt i fjellet. Snøoverflaten vil være i endring med pågående snøvær og vinddreining til nordlig retning fredag.

På Vågan ble det observert kantkorn under fokksnøen 20. feb sammen med et lag av hagl / nysnø. 19. feb ble det også observert mulig svakt lag av kantkorn ved Tjeldsund. Stabilitetstest viste ikke bruddforplantning. Det er ikke observert faretegn relatert til dette. Eventuelle svake lag ligger trolig under harde fokksnøflak og vil være vanskelige å påvirke.

Natt til onsdag gikk det et skred på veg flere steder på Flakstadøya.

Tirsdag ble det observert stor utbredelse av overflaterim i fjellet ved Svolvær, mens onsdag var mye av overflaterimet føyket bort.

Friday 25. February 2022

10 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 200 m a.s.l Friday night. Gale from north, changing to strong breeze from the northwest during renoon. -10 °C to -1 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Bygevær gjør at skredfaren øker i le for nordvestlig vind utover dagen. Det kan også finnes ustabil fokksnø i andre himmelretninger etter sørlig bygevær torsdag, selv om skredfaren vil avta der vinden ikke laster inn snø. Enkelte skred kan løsne naturlig mens pålagringen pågår. Bygevær gir lokale forskjeller i regionen. Skredfaren vil være størst i områder med mye nysnø og vind. Gunstig temperatur gjør at fokksnøen vil stabiliseres relativt raskt.
